The goal of MIRDC

Is to promote the development and upgrading of metals and related industries in the country.

To achieve this goal

The Centre carries out research and development and provides an array of services for technology transfer to the industrial community.

The Precision Parallel Seam Welding Technology

At current stage, the precision parallel seam welding technology is completely done by imported machine. Additionally there are few papers and researches in this field so that the technology is totally grasped by foreign equipment manufacturers. The main applications include microwave devices, quartz crystal, semiconductor and photoelectric devices. The production value of semiconductor and photo-electricity seal industry is estimated to be more than NT$51.6 billion and will show an annual growth of 15.1%. Taiwan, Mainland China and Japan adopt the laser welding to conduct the seal welding of battery shell for lithium battery and nickel hydrogen battery. However the laser welding technology has the following shortcomings: 1. the cost of laser equipment is too high (for example: manpower, training, maintenance and consumables) 2. low production efficiency (production speed is slow) 3. many factors affect the quality (for example: shells fitting, machining accuracy and surface roughness of shell). MIRDC currently develops a system to increase the production capacity of lithium battery by parallel seam welding technology with hope of increasing 20% application of the parallel seam welding technology.
