MIRDC is developing a large-sized metal TV frame to overcome heat dissipation

The domestic TV industry has just launched a 55-inch LCD TV. The increase in dimension and brightness of the flat panel display system will result in higher running heat. However, traditional plastic frames are poor (not effective) at dissipating convection heat. To comply with the need for thinness and the ability to be hung on the wall, many TV manufacturers in Japan, Korea and Europe have adopted aluminum alloy frames as a substitute. Supported by the Science & Technology Project of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, MIRDC will develop a large-sized metal TV frame to assist domestic manufacturers in penetrating the market.

Meanwhile, the WEEE directive formulated by the EU has requested manufacturers to guarantee that waste recycling will reach a certain ratio before 2006. Moreover, Japan has enforced mandatory TV recycling in 2001. Both aluminum alloy frames and magnesium alloy frames can be completely recycled. Since Taiwanese TV manufacturers have ambitions to control the international LCD TV market, they have to meet the environmental requirements of LCD TVs in the international market.

Global flat panel manufacturers constantly make capital investment to ensure their competitiveness. MIRDC conceives that the market growth of large size LCD TVs is promising with the continuing reduction of cost. If we examine the manufacturing process of TV metal frames, the cost is comparatively higher than that of plastic frames since the metal frame is made by pressing or extrusion and joining with many steps and components. Therefore, MIRDC is dedicated to developing a metal frame by die-casting technology that can support complicated model design with less post-processing and cost. MIRDC has already widely exchanged product information with large domestic TV manufacturers. The preliminary outcomes are expected to be announced by the end of this year. MIRDC will continuously develop even larger-sized frames to assist local TV manufacturers in aggressively supplying the international market with large size LCD TVs.
