To absorb motorcycle vibration and increase riders’ comfort, MIRDC has developed heat-resistant magnesium die-casting technology

MIRDC has recently developed heat-resistant magnesium die-casting for transmission parts of motorcycle through a research project, sponsored by Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA). Since magnesium is one-third lighter than aluminum, the damping capacity of magnesium is thirty times than aluminum, Taiwan motorcycle industry has gradually adopting magnesium alloy to replace aluminum alloy for weight reduction purpose.
At current stage, for manufacturing magnesium motorcycle parts that work in room temperature, local makers usually adopt magnesium AM60 alloy. However, for manufacturing parts like crankshaft housing which has to endure 150℃ in operation, AM60 can no longer meet the requirements of function.
To deal with this problem, MIRDC inked the strategic alliance with Dead Sea Magnesium Co., Israel, to introduce a heat and creep resistant magnesium alloy applied in die-casting technology. With this material, MIRDC tried to create new solution to replace current aluminum alloy die-casting with soundproof material used in crankshaft housing. The application of heat and creep resistant magnesium alloy offers 25% reduction of cost compared with current aluminum alloy.
