With the ongoing momentum of net-zero carbon reduction initiatives, the Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC) remains at the forefront. Following its 2024 commitment to full participation in ESG sustainable development actions, MIRDC published its first Sustainability Report in December 2024 and implemented the ISO 14064-1 Greenhouse Gas Inventory. By February 2025, it successfully passed the verification process, and in March, a certification ceremony was held—marking a major step in MIRDC’s efforts toward the goals of net-zero carbon reduction and environmental sustainability. To ensure implementation of the inventory process, MIRDC organized 45 participating units. Greenhouse gas emissions were not limited to office building’s electricity consumption, and it also included various process laboratories, pilot plants, and training activities. Through the inventory, employees experienced firsthand that net-zero carbon reduction is not just a slogan but a habit implemented in daily workplace life.
To ensure the credibility of the results of its self-conducted greenhouse gas inventory, MIRDC commissioned the Green Technology Research Institute, CPC Corporation, Taiwan, a third-party professional verification body, for an assessment. The verification was completed in February 2025, and MIRDC received certification at the Reasonable Assurance Level (Categories 1 and 2). The scope of the inventory covered MIRDC’s Kaohsiung headquarters and the Traditional Industries Innovation Center, with total greenhouse gas emissions amounting to 4,479.356 metric tons of CO2e. In advancing environmental sustainability, MIRDC has actively implemented relevant concrete measures. Internally, MIRDC has carried out improvements to air conditioning systems (saving 81,689 kWh of electricity per year), transitioned to digital workflows (reducing paper usage by 30%), as well as fully replaced lighting with energy-saving LED fixtures and improved laboratory insulation to reduce energy consumption. For the industrial sector, MIRDC has obtained accreditation from the Taiwan Accreditation Foundation (TAF) as a “greenhouse gas verification body.” MIRDC has also trained 422 professionals in carbon inventory and reduction, assisted industries in adopting recycled aluminum and low-carbon aluminum materials, reducing carbon emissions by 44,424 metric tons of CO2e, and helped the sector cut overall carbon emissions by 134,474 metric tons of CO2e.
Ren-Yi Lin, chairman of MIRDC, stated that MIRDC will invest in additional environmental sustainability initiatives and measures in the future, including implementing green procurement, establishing an energy management system platform to identify energy-saving opportunities and improve energy efficiency management, and upgrading to high-efficiency chiller air conditioning and motor systems. MIRDC will also further enhance its industry support by obtaining qualifications for product carbon footprint verification consulting and becoming a product carbon footprint verification body. MIRDC will remain dedicated to the spirit of R&D, innovation, and service, continuously driving sustainable development and striving to contribute to Taiwan’s sustainability through a practical approach.
