The goal of MIRDC

Is to promote the development and upgrading of metals and related industries in the country.

To achieve this goal

The Centre carries out research and development and provides an array of services for technology transfer to the industrial community.

MTIC obtained OPITO certification and became the first training center in Taiwan to provide multi-standard training courses

Maritime Technology Innovation Center (MTIC) was established under the approval of Executive Yuan in 2017 and organized by the Energy Administration, Ministry of Economic Affairs to Metal Industries Research and Development Center (MIRDC) to manage the overall operation of the zone. After obtaining GWO certification in January 2021, it has added new courses. Currently, it can provide up to 28 modules of training projects, becoming an essential offshore wind power training institution in the Asia-Pacific region. Wind power personnel from the Asia-Pacific region come to the Marine Zone for training. In November 2023, after nearly a year of hard work, it finally received certification from another important international training organization in the offshore wind power industry, the Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organization (OPITO), becoming the first training center in Taiwan to receive this certification honor. In the future, wind turbine technicians who perform offshore construction operations and maintenance at the Taiwan Strait wind farm will be provided with basic training on safely taking helicopters in and out of the wind farm.

OPITO was established in 1991 and is an essential training standard setter in the offshore oil and gas industry. Therefore, OPITO's training standards are critical safety guidelines for international offshore wind power and maritime projects. There are more than 230 training institutions in 50 countries worldwide, and 450,000 people participate in various trainings yearly. The training courses certified by the Marine Zone this time are Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET), Further Offshore Emergency Training (FOET) and Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET). The Taiwan Strait's ongoing offshore wind power and maritime projects and the operation and maintenance of wind farms can provide a safer environment for practitioners. Using helicopters to transport personnel can allow developers and operators to offer more efficient personnel transfer and cargo transportation methods when weather conditions are poor so that wind farms will not be shut down for any reason. Using helicopters will also bring more derivative training needs, such as Rappel and Retrieve for rear cabin personnel and helicopter underwater escape training for front cabin flight personnel.

Wind energy-related facilities are becoming increasingly advanced, and wind power generation will inevitably shoulder the vital task of energy transformation in the future. Significantly reducing production costs is quite economically competitive and has development potential in renewable energy. The wind power industry requires continuous training from all relevant industry participants to improve their professional skills. Since MIRDC has been responsible for the operation of MTIC, it has been committed to providing a safe working environment for employees. After obtaining OPITO certification this time, MTIC will become the first in Taiwan A training center that offers multiple international certification standard courses (GWO and OPITO) and will add other standardized training and customized courses through the development process of domestic offshore wind power, allowing MTIC to continue to become a professional talent pool for wind power and maritime engineering in Taiwan and the Asia-Pacific region training center.
