Smart Multifunctional Periodontal Pathology Quick Screening System(SMPPQSS)of MIRDC

With the advent of an aging society, in addition to the common diseases such as cardiac disease, hypertension, diabetes, stroke, dental caries and periodontal diseases are the most common oral diseases among the elderly. Decreased chewing ability of elderly people often result in nutritional deficiency and indigestion due to oral diseases. In addition, periodontal disease causes bacteria to spread into the heart and blood system, which can easily cause problems such as decreased immunity. Current clinical dentists take visual inspection and integrated judgment with plaque-check disclosing agents during periodontal care which is time-consuming and inconvenient. Therefore, under the support of the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT), Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), MIRDC implements the "Smart medical technology application and cross-field certification program", hoping to provide dentists with a non-invasive, painless, convenient and fast digital oral pathology testing program in allowing dentists or dental assistants to quickly check the periodontal health regardless of environmental restrictions, whether in hospitals, clinics, community medical institutions or at home.

MIRDC was invited to participate in the “2021 Member Conference and Academic Symposium” held by Taiwan Academy of Periodontology on the 20th and 21st of November, 2021. At the Symposium MIRDC presented the Smart Multifunctional Periodontal Pathology Quick Screening System (SMPPQSS), as the system includes Detal Plaque Fluorescence Detector and Gingivitis Spectrum Detector, it detects the subject in a non-invasive way, changing the existing method of periodontal pathology detection one by one, and does not need to apply plaque-check disclosing agents to perform dental bacteria detection. It is not necessary to use the periodontal probe to check the pocket of the patient to determine the degree of periodontitis. AI model training is carried out through image analysis, identification technology, detection values, and clinician experience, and converted into judgment criteria for diagnosing disease changes, which can achieve the function of AI automatic identification and interpretation. In addition, this system was also final listed for the R&D100, which is known as the Oscar of the science and technology industry. The two-day symposium attracted nearly a hundred guests’ inquiries.

Dr. Chih-Lung, Lin the Vice President of MIRDC pointed that, according to a study by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, nearly 70% of middle-aged and elderly people in Taiwan suffer from periodontal disease. At present, the international market for the immediate periodontal and gingival pathology of the oral cavity will have a great demand, and the Smart Multifunctional Periodontal Pathology Quick Screening System (SMPPQSS) of MIRDC provides dentists with fast early periodontal disease screening services. Its pioneering tooth position identification and dental bacteria distribution and area calculation technology digitizes the detection data and automatically generates inspection forms, reducing the time for medical staff to fill in the form, shortening the original 30 minutes to less than 10 minutes of work time, which greatly reduces the discomfort of patients during the examination and shortens the time for dentists to diagnose and record. In the future, MIRDC will continue to provide a variety of smart medical solutions to act as a shield for the domestic industries in technological development and performance improvement, and strengthen the market competitiveness by the Taiwan-made products of system.
