The goal of MIRDC

Is to promote the development and upgrading of metals and related industries in the country.

To achieve this goal

The Centre carries out research and development and provides an array of services for technology transfer to the industrial community.

MIRDC’s RTurb UAV Inspection system won 2020 R&D Awards, renowned as the “Oscars of Technology”

In the expectation of the world, R&D 100 Awards, renowned as the “Oscars of Science”, has recently announced the 2020 winning list of 100 innovative technologies and products with infinite possibilities. MIRDC has a total of three technical finalists this year, and two of which have won the awards, with a winning percentage is more than 60% and being able to keep abreast with the world-renowned MIT Lincoln Laboratory and Toyota Central R&D Laboratory. In addition to showing that Taiwan's scientific and technological R&D and innovation capabilities are in sync with the international level, while cultivating the core capabilities of domestic industrial development, it continues to advance with the goal of creating a better life.

In recent years, Taiwan has been developing wind power industry of green energy. However, with uncertainties of wind farm may face, sudden wind disturbance and turbulence during operation. To avoid those collisions, the current inspection method is to stop wind turbine first, and then use UAV to go around each blade of the wind turbine and check. MIRDC’s winning "RTurb UAV Inspection system" of 2020 can perform inspection mode without shutting down the wind turbine. The advantage is that it will not lose power generation by turning off the wind turbine, and the blade structure and pillars in operation are inspected by observing the actual movement status would help understand the real problem, which also makes the detection advantage in operation more prominent. In addition, "RTurb UAV Inspection system" is characterized by the ability of detecting when wind turbine is operating. It is also featured with heavy payload between 15 to 25 kilograms, and withstand the wind with a Beaufort scale of 7, and takes an average of 5 minutes to complete the inspection of a single blade. When the inspection time is shortened, and the possibility of being operated with large-scale mode which makes the inspection more efficient.

With the support of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, MIRDC will not only continue to refine the research and development of scientific and technological achievements, but also link industrial needs to overcome industrial gaps with R&D results, thereby enhancing the value of the overall industry chain, assisting the government to strengthen the capability of industrial transformation and upgrading and drive Taiwan’s development and the growth of the generation industry. While continuing to stand on the stage of success in the 2020 R&D 100 Awards, this not only symbolizes the international affirmation of MIRDC, but also means that MIRDC continues to promote the capability of R&D achievements to the world and leap onto the world stage.
