The urgent need for bacteria resistance is an important topic that can help children from getting sick so frequently at school, cross-infection from occurring in hospital clinics and reduce the possibility of diseases from spreading to ultimately create reassuring living areas. The MIRDC joined hands with the industry and had successfully developed MIT antibacterial stainless steel. From the breakthrough research to the successful production by Tang Eng Iron Works, the first stainless steel production line in Taiwan, many innovative applications and designs are proactively carried out in various fields. This is also Taiwan's new advantage in materials and new opportunity for creating products of high value.

The MIRDC held the Antibacterial Stainless Steel Technology and Application Development Seminar at the Garden Villa in Kaohsiung. More than 100 participants from the industry, academia, and research sectors attended the event, including experts from the kitchenware industry, the food industry, the medical devices industry, agriculture, fishery, and animal husbandry, the biotechnology manufacturing industry, and the design industry. In addition to the current international status and future trends of antibacterial stainless steel, the seminar also held three special sessions on material characteristics and testing, business opportunities, and application examples. Afterwards, there were applied technology exchanges to bring about alternative thinking about the technical research and development.

The high-performance antibacterial stainless steel successfully developed by the MIRDC together with Tang Eng Iron Works has passed the JIS Z2801 test specification of Japan, which includes seven types of common pathogens and 5 types of fungi. The stainless steel has an antibacterial rate of over 99.9%, and retains good corrosion resistance, the mechanical properties, and the surface texture of stainless steel. Dr. Chin-Chuan Huang, Technical Director of the MIRDC, said that this breakthrough, high-performance antibacterial stainless steel will lead Taiwan's fabricated metal products and their applied industries in leap forward, not only in offering more design possibilities, but also expanding the scope of application to refined agriculture, aquaculture, medical technology, civil industry, and construction, helping manufacturers to increase the value of their products and make the quality of Taiwan's manufacturing shine in the international market.
