MIRDC Signs a Contract with CPC Corporation to Create a Platform for Carbon Emission Reduction

On May 28th, the MIRDC and the CPC Corporation signed a letter of intent for carbon dioxide capture, storage, and utilization (CCSU) in renewable energy technology cooperation. This agreement is expected to make inroads in energy saving and environmental business opportunities, create a low carbon social environment, and set a new milestone for Taiwan’s renewable energy technology.

Witnessed by CPC Chairman of the Board Lin, Sheng-Chung, MIRDC Chairman of the Board Huang, Chi-chuan, and other VIP guests, CPC Corporation General Manager Chen, Lu-Wei and MIRDC President Fu, Ho-Chung represented both parties in signing the letter of intent. Chairman Huang stated that in the last decade carbon capture and storage technology has been emphasized by various nations, and has been deemed by the IEA as an important method for reducing carbon emissions. MIRDC is equipped with rich industry resources and technology knowhow, and has long established a strong relationship with international and domestic research and development sectors. Both parties expect to cooperate closely in the future, mutually complement each other’s technology, and create a low carbon, low pollution environment.

For the last 20 years, Taiwan’s carbon emissions have been in the top 22 in global rankings. Energy saving and carbon reduction have become global trends, and as the international community gradually forms a consensus on reducing carbon dioxide emissions, Taiwan has listed CCSU as a promotion item in the Sustainable Energy Policy Agenda. The objective is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to 260 million metric tons (approximately the total emission level in 2005) in the next six years (2016 to 2020), and to reduce emissions to 210 million metric tons in the next ten years (approximately the total emission level in 2000).

Considering the sustainability and safety of national energy, energy saving and carbon reduction strategy is an option that Taiwan must develop. This cooperation between the two parties is a great step for Taiwan’s CCSU research and development, and can strengthen the industrialization of Taiwan’s CCSU technology.
