The goal of MIRDC

Is to promote the development and upgrading of metals and related industries in the country.

To achieve this goal

The Centre carries out research and development and provides an array of services for technology transfer to the industrial community.

MIRDC Collaborates with National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology on the Establishment

With the support of the Economic Development Bureau, Kaohsiung City Government and the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), MIRDC (Metal Industries Research & Development Centre) held the “2022 Kaohsiung Aerospace Course Conference and APM Academia Industry Alliance Opening Ceremony” at National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology on July 4th. Representatives from Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry, Taiwan Aerospace Industry Association, Committee for Aviation and Space Industry Development (CASID) of the MOEA, National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST), National Taiwan University, Feng Chia University, and the local aerospace industry of southern Taiwan were invited to attend the event. Chair Professor Jyh-Horng Chou of Feng Chia University and Deputy Director Chih-Wei Chien of CASID were also invited to introduce green smart manufacturing and the guidance resources for national defense and aerospace industries respectively; furthermore, Prof. Jiun-Huei Wu of the Graduate Institute of Astrophysics of National Taiwan University introduced the global hackathon event hosted by NASA, hoping local businesses and academic institutions may participate in the event together.

At the beginning of the ceremony, Acting President Chih-Lung Lin of MIRDC mentioned that aerospace parts have a significant importance in the top metal machining market supply chain, and Taiwan holds an important position in the international aerospace industry supply chain. And with Kaohsiung as an important cluster of the aerospace industry and the global growing needs for new high performance aviation engines and fleets, Taiwan will have the chance to acquire a majority of aerospace machining purchase orders in Asia. For many years, MIRDC has been dedicated to the research and development of advanced manufacturing technology for high-temperature metal parts, metal additive manufacturing, and smart manufacturing. And going forward, MIRDC will also establish a national defense and aerospace industry development division to continue assisting and supporting relevant industries.

According to Huan-Yu Lin, Director of Industrial Upgrading Service Department of MIRDC, the courses this year will be taught by Executive Officer Chun-Chih Kuo of the Metal Product Development Technology R&D Centre of National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST). Sheet Metal Forming and Sheet Metal 5-axis Machining is the self-developed integrated technology of NKUST that has been successfully applied to the manufacturing of aircraft parts, and in order to widely promote the technology to aircraft manufacturers, MIRDC collaborates with NKUST to let the aerospace industry fully understand the basic principles and the actual application of this technology. Applying the technology of stamping forming on the development of aerospace sheet metal shortens the development process of sheet metal parts and lowers costs at the same time.

Furthermore, the courses take NKUST obtaining the Republic of China and United States invention patents with the new rubber forming technology as an example to let manufacturers understand the current situation of technology application and gain more competitiveness in the world.
