MIRDC Partners with Industries to Develop the Hydrogen Industry Chain to Build a Sustainable Future

As global interest in sustainable energy grows, numerous countries are investing in hydrogen application technologies. In response to Taiwan's net-zero transition policy and to promote the implementation of hydrogen applications, MIRDC, guided by the Department of Industrial Technology, MOEA, has been actively developing technologies for high-pressure transport and storage and industrial combustion applications through Technology Development Programs. MIRDC is dedicated to establishing the essential technological capabilities for Taiwan's hydrogen industry chain.

MIRDC has signed cooperation memoranda with 22 industry partners, encompassing hydrogen supply, materials, process equipment, end applications, and third-party verification to collaboratively advance hydrogen technology. In the first half of 2025, China Steel Corporation and Kaori Heat Treatment Co., Ltd. officially joined the alliance to boost the practical application of hydrogen technology in the industrial sector. On April 30, MIRDC hosted “the Sustainable Hydrogen - Hydrogen Industry Chain Seminar” to guide Taiwan in establishing a comprehensive hydrogen industry chain. The event included discussions on various topics such as hydrogen production, transport and storage, industrial combustion, and hydrogenation technology.

MIRDC has actively invested in hydrogen combustion technology by developing new burners designed explicitly for boilers and industrial boilers, establishing Taiwan’s 25% and 50% mixed hydrogen and 100% pure hydrogen combustion capability. Additionally, MIRDC has collaborated with domestic companies to promote the industrial applications of this technology. In recent years, China Steel Corporation has actively developed and implemented various technologies to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net-zero targets, establishing itself as a model in Taiwan. Through collaboration between the two parties and the alliance, industrial hydrogen application technologies can be introduced into the steel production process. This initiative aims to support the domestic industry's transition to low-carbon practices. MIRDC’s will integrate Kaori’s hydrogen modularized energy system solution for heat treatment to produce hydrogen and generate energy. In addition, MIRDC will help Kaori in developing inspection technology for high-pressure hydrogen materials and components. This partnership aims to gradually enhance the upstream and downstream sectors of the hydrogen industry chain, ultimately boosting overall industry competitiveness.

During this seminar, MIRDC demonstrated its technical capabilities and progress in collaboration with domestic and overseas companies in high-pressure hydrogen transport and storage, industrial combustion, and hydrogen testing. Furthermore, Kaori Heat Treatment was invited to present its industrial hydrogen production technology and CPC Corporation, Taiwan, to discuss the current status and future applications of industrial hydrogen. This seminar aimed to connect Taiwan's hydrogen industry and promote interaction and exchanges among cross-industry players. Yung-Hsiang Lai, President of MIRDC, stated that hydrogen is a crucial driving force for the global transition to net-zero emissions and is essential for carbon reduction in the industrial sector. MIRDC has established strong domestic capabilities in key technologies, including high-pressure storage tank design, anti-hydrogen embrittlement welding, hydrogen-permeation-resistant materials, and hydrogen-mixed combustion. MIRDC will continue to focus on integrating technologies and building connections within the industry chain. MIRDC aims to collaborate with industry and academia partners to advance technologies for hydrogen applications while working towards the vision of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
