MIRDC's Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Is the First to Conduct Smart Power Inspections

The MIRDC Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Power Inspection Achievements Presentation was held at the Innovation Value-added Center of Traditional Industry, MOEA on January 6, 2020. The presentation focused on the reliability of the system; the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) retain their normal automatic flight and smart inspection capabilities in high altitude and special electromagnetic environments of high-voltage transmission lines, establishing the first domestic case of smart power inspection of Taiwan Power Company's high-voltage towers by unmanned aerial vehicles. At the same time, in cooperation with Taiwan Power Company, the high-voltage tower inspection test will be carried out at the site, which will save more than half of the time spent on manual inspections in the future, and the close proximity with electrical equipment will be no need. Such achievement reveals great significance to the stability of Taiwan Power Company's domestic power supply.

At present, Taiwan's high-voltage power transmission system is limited by the location of power plants. Transmission towers are often located on remote or sloping edges; and in mountain areas, there are often no roads, making manual inspections very hard, laborious, time-consuming, and dangerous. In particular, there are special safety issues that are difficult to detect by sight, such as abnormalities in the structure of the tower foundation, insulators, structure of the electric tower, and transmission lines. Technology is urgently needed to help overcome these difficulties.

Dr. Chiu-Feng Lin, President of MIRDC, pointed out that MIRDC has invested many years in its research and development of unmanned vehicle system control technology, and has set up a smart mobile vehicle R&D center to strengthen the application of R&D results and industrialization mechanism. In view of the fact that domestic power inspections are currently still conducted manually, the use of MIRDC's unmanned aerial vehicles to conduct smart inspection of electric towers can improve the safety of inspectors. Among them, the unmanned aerial vehicle has cooperated with military units and the industry and has been verified. The UAV is equipped with high load, long duration, and high wind resistance characteristics. After customized design and analysis, UAV has been linked with domestic companies to create unique applications for different industry scenarios. In the future, UAC will focus on software development and system integration to strengthen Taiwan's uniqueness and competitiveness in the global market.
