MIRDC Promotes the Sports and Recreational Equipment Industry

The output value of sports goods manufactured by Taiwan is nearly NT$500 billion including badminton rackets, bicycles, soccer balls, to footwear and protective gear. Many world's elite athletes show their preference sports goods for MIT (Made in Taiwan)! Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC) held the “Cross-discipline Exchange and Sharing Meeting for a Light Metal Smart Living Service Ecosystem” in National Chung Cheng University on October 20, 2017(Friday) under the guidance of the Small and Medium Enterprise Administration, MOEA. The meeting aims to create value for sports brands, industrial clusters of small and medium enterprises, and further plan product design and business models. Domestic companies that apply light metal to sports and recreational goods were invited to take part in the exchanges and discussions. Numerous experts and scholars as well as prestigious companies in the field of sports shared their successful experiences, and gave an insightful view of technology, R&D, design and marketing.

Dr. Ching-Ming Chen, Vice President of MIRDC, pointed out that cross-discipline collaboration is the new norm in business following the constant shifts in industrial development trends. Coupled with the growing popularity of exercise, many sports goods manufacturers are now expanding to sportswear, wearable technologies, digital medicine, social network marketing, and healthcare for the elderly, and marketing in major sports events. As such, the boundaries between sports goods manufacturing and recreational services are no longer clear and definite, and related industries are picking up the pace of their development strategy.

In light of the advantages offered by light metals, such as light, high strength, easy to process, and damping, they are widely applied in sports and recreational equipment and bicycle products. Since sports products are consumer products, their manufacturing and marketing are directly affected by market trends, individual income, and product prices. Higher value/lightweight products, including golf products, bicycles, rackets, roller skates, fitness equipment, baseball products, fishing products, table tennis products, water sports products, billiards products, and bowling products, are the way of the future. MIRDC is currently proactively assisting domestic sports goods manufacturers in creating higher added value, and is matching them with other industries to create a robust business ecosystem inside the island. Hopefully, this will soon allow the domestic industry to enter the global sports manufacturing and recreational services market.
