New Developments in Taiwan's Medical Devices, Breakthrough in Sleep Health

Nowadays, people are suffered by poor sleep quality. Effective solutions are needed for this problem. The Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs commissioned the Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC) to hold the 2020 Sleep Health Clinical Practices and Business Matching Workshop in the Elite Hall A of the International Education and Training Center in the CCH Fu-Mao building on August 28, 2020 (Friday), inviting respiratory care experts, scholars, clinical professionals of Changhua Christian Hospital (CCH) and domestic professional research companies to attend the event, which is expected to enhance the social influence of Taiwan's sleep health industry.

Statistics show that about 20% of adults suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The prevalence is similar to asthma and diabetes, yet nearly 90% are not diagnosed and treated. OSA will cause daytime sleepiness, depression, and cognitive impairment, which may lead to accidents. It may also cause high blood pressure and arrhythmia due to hypoxia and excessive sympathetic activation, which may increase the risk of myocardial infarction, heart failure, and stroke. Thus, the sleep health industry will be the most promising industry in the future.

Dr. Nina Kao of CCH was invited to host the event, Dr. Kuo-Yang Huang and Dr. Kai-Ming Chang of CCH were invited to share their experiences in sleep health, and manufacturers specializing in the field of sleep health were invited to introduce the latest medical products and technologies, including the continuous positive airway pressure machine by APEX, AmCAD-UO by AmCad BioMed, wrist pulse oximeter/multi-parameter patient monitor/hydrogen and oxygen generator by North-vision, iNAP by Somnics, and Soteria One Point Zero (medical images and records transmission system) by Soteria Biotech. Outstanding technologies developed by domestic manufacturers were showcased through product introductions, experiencing, and trial.

Dr. Chih-Lung Lin, Vice President of MIRDC, said that MIRDC has dedicated to the medical device market for more than a decade and has watched the medical device industry gradually move from dental implant manufacturing, surgical instruments, preoperative planning and surgical navigation to smart digital healthcare and is now focusing on improving healthcare. MIRDC hopes to encourage cross-industry cooperation among industry, official, academia, research, and medical sectors by linking together the investment of relevant manufacturers in the industry to achieve results with valuable clinical information for effective marketing, so as to establish Taiwan as a development center for global healthcare.
