Taiwan and Belgium’s Offshore Wind Industries Technology Exchange Focus on Innovation Applications

The Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC) and the Flanders Investment & Trade of Belgian Office Taipei together held the Taiwan-Belgium Offshore Wind Industry Seminar at the Taipei International Convention Center. Belgian operators including those in system integration, power grid connection, sea exploration, submarine communications cable, smart monitoring system, anti-corrosion materials, and new equipment technology were invited to attract the attendance of more than 100 domestic operators, hoping to promote future collaboration opportunities between Taiwan and Belgian companies.

In his opening speech, Dr. Chia-min Wei, the Vice President of MIRDC, pointed out that MIRDC is the main driver of the localization of the offshore wind industry of the Industrial Development Bureau, MOEA, and is committed to promoting government policies, guiding Taiwanese companies, and continuing to invest in technology research and development. The purpose of this exchange and matchmaking conference is to build a smart offshore wind turbine industry chain and technology innovation capability in Taiwan, expecting these to become the growth momentum of the offshore wind industry. MIRDC hopes to help the domestic industry grasp international development trends and connect to global market through professional technical exchanges.

Mr. Rik Van Droogenbroeck, the Director of Belgian Office, Taipei, emphasized that in addition to the well-known maritime construction and turnkey capability in Belgium, Belgian companies can provide smart solutions for advanced offshore M2M communication, control, and security needed by offshore wind turbines and wind farm operations and maintenance. Mr. Rik Van Droogenbroeck hopes to increase the opportunities for discussions between the two parties through today's exchange to create new business opportunities together.

During the seminar, Mr. Tsung-Wen Huang, the Secretary General of the Taiwan Wind Industry Association, introduced the strategy and goals of the Taiwan government to promote the development of the offshore wind industry, and Blue Cluster of Belgium gave a speech on the theme of offshore wind power R&D and planning in Belgium. Also, 11 offshore wind power operatorrs from Belgium shared smart technology applications and their valuable offshore wind power experiences.

The matchmaking activities of the day also set up a bridge for many domestic and foreign industry professionals to discuss the fields and topics they specialize in, which received a resounding response. The matchmaking not only promoted the technical cooperation between Belgium and Taiwan, but also accelerated the development of the foundation of Taiwan's smart offshore wind industry, strengthening the competitiveness of domestic companies in the offshore wind energy market.
